New Camera Equipment

I'm going out of the country this summer and it's been a nice excuse to get some new camera stuff. I just bought a Canon XSi, a Pentax Optio W90, and a Professor Kobre's Light Scoop.

The XSi is a 12.2 megapixel DSLR with a 3-inch LCD screen, and it uses SD and SDHC cards. Mine came with a 18-55mm zoom lens with an image stabilizer that lets you shoot at 1/30 second without any shake, which is particularly nice in low light situations, taking you down a whole f-stop to get those pictures that weren't quite light enough without. It's got a built-in sensor cleaner that works each time you switch off the camera, and has a mode where you can shoot a full white background and the camera corrects dust spots on other shots based on what dust shows up on the lens. And apparently it can shoot 53 shots in a row (JPEGs, only 6 RAW) at 3.5 shots per second... that might make a cool sports project.

The light scoop is basically just a mirror that attaches to cameras and redirects the built-in flash upwards at the ceiling (or a wall when the camera is turned on its side). The result is very nicely diffused light, as you can see in these two -

Different lighting situations can get tricky; the flash totally depends on what's above the camera to reflect it, so it's probably not going to be very useful outside (but I haven't tried that yet). Inside is pretty awesome though. Here's a couple I took in my room in really low tungsten light -
